Elk Hair Caddis (Hackled)

Elk Hair Caddis (Hackled) Dry Fly

The Elk Hair Caddis is credited to Pennsylvanian tier Al Troth and dates from the 1950’s.  A wing of Elk Hair and a hackled body provide buoyancy.

It is tied to represent the adult Sedge or Caddis but is often used as a general searching pattern to good effect.

The Caddis  (Tricoptera) is an important species to fly fisherman.  There are many different species but most are similar in appearance varying only in size and colour.    They have a distinctive roof-winged profile and long antennae that makes them easily identified.

Caddis / Sedge are present on both stillwater and rivers across the UK.  From mid Spring until mid Autumn adults emerge often at dusk, taking some time to get airborne, skating across the surface and attracting the attention of fish.
