Bob Wyatt’s Deer Hair Emerger Variant

The Deer Hair Emerger (DHE) was brought to prominence in Bob Wyatt’s celebrated book ‘Trout Hunting’.  Its equally at home on both stillwater and rivers.  The fly offers what Bob calls ‘prey image’.  Something that will allow the fly to be picked out rather than ignored – such as silhouette and size.

The DHE is a generic pattern.  The fly hangs in the film with the deer hair visible to the angler, keeping it afloat.

On stillwaters the DHE is effective when fish are taking emerging buzzers.  On rivers the fly covers upwings and sedges as they hang in the film ready to emerge.
